In Belle Plaine, MN the city established a veterans park on city
land and did a masterful job of planning and laying out the
park. It respectfully honor all veterans equally. Sometime
last fall that all changed when acquaintances of a deceased WWll
resident moved a sculpture of a person kneeling by a rifle, boots
and helmet a Latin cross from private property into the city owned
veterans park without permission from the city or thought in how
the religious sculptor would change the park or reaction of the
residents.
A complaint as filed with Freedom From Religion Foundation.
Our guest Rebecca Markert, Senior Legal Advisor to FFRF responded
on behalf of the complainant and FFRF citing the sculpture was
religious in nature and a violation of the Establishment clause. On
this program we will review this case and others FFRF has filed in
the past year.
